Applied Design building is completed

Upon completion of the Applied Design building, only one of its planned five niches — the Renaissance — was fully carved. The remaining niches would stand unfinished for more than 70 years.

CMU elevates printing to fine art.

CMU founds the Laboratory Press, the only program in the country for the teaching of fine printing and the only to treat printing as a fine art.

The Carnegie Tech chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity (Alpha Omega chapter) is chartered and "The Skibo Song" created.

Prior to this, men’s musical activities were sponsored almost entirely by a local honorary fraternity for music students known as the Clef Club. The Phi Mu Alpha chapter immediately held a song contest to “secure new college songs for Carnegie,” resulting in the composition of “The Skibo Song.”

Five female music students organize a music club, which soon became a chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) music sorority.

The Alpha Mu Chapter, with an initial membership of 15, was installed at the college on May 16, 1930. SAI is still a vital and vibrant part of the Carnegie Mellon School of Music.

The School of Music graduates its first black students, Lawrence W. Peeler (pictured) and James Miller, initiating a long tradition of diversity among the faculty and student body.

Legendary pianist Earl Wild enters the Department of Music.

Wild would play in the first ever coast-to-coast live radio broadcast of a concert with the Carnegie Symphony Orchestra in 1936.
