First Beaux Arts Ball is held.

This infamous multidisciplinary art party and costume ball quickly became a campus tradition and was held every four years until the 1990s.

Spring Carnival begins.

While a variety of spring festivities take place as early as 1914, Spring Carnival as it is now known begins when Sweepstakes starts rolling and efforts are made to reconnect alumni with campus.

The first Buggies roll.

Originally dubbed the Interfraternity Motor Sweepstakes, the inaugural Buggy races take place in 1920 as part of the university’s first alumni celebration, Campus Week.

The Fence is created.

The senior class builds a fence on campus as a place for seniors to celebrate their time at CMU. Over time, this tradition evolves to one of free expression through painting for all (and only) CMU students.
