The Tarr and Wonson Copper Paint Factory was built.

The Tarr & Wonson Copper Paint Factory was established at Tarr’s wharf in 1863 by Augustus Wonson and James G. Tarr but moved to its present location in 1870.

The Cape Ann Granite Company provided a 18' x 7' slab of granite for the front step of the Baptist Church on the corner of Pleasant and Warren Streets.

The Cape Ann Granite Company used 15 oxen to tow the largest slab they had ever provided downtown. The step stayed in place until 1966 when it was moved to the path to the Fitz Henry Lane House by the Cape Ann Historical Association.

Solomon Trumbull, Charles A. Chadwick, and John Todd formed a business partnership under the name Gloucester Granite Company. They owned quarries in West Gloucester and in Bay View.

Local entrepeneur and philanthropist Samel E. Sawyer purchased the clock and bell for the tower of Gloucester City Hall.

A hotel coach operated from Lanesville to Front Street.

The hotel coach, known as the “California mud wagon,” made the seven-mile journey with twenty passengers. It was operated by Levi Dennen.

Alfred Mansfield Brooks was born in Michigan in 1870. His mother died soon after his birth and his father gave him to his maternal grandmother, Abigal Somes (Davis) Mansfield of Gloucester to raise.

The Second Town House was dedicated.

The new Town House was dedicated on June 22, 1871. Addison Gilbert, the chairman of the building committee addressed the large crowd, a choir sang, and Reverend Robert P. Rogers offered a prayer.

A. Piatt Andrew (1873-1936) was a Harvard economist, politiciation who served in the U.S. House of Representatives and as the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, and the founder and director of the Ambulance Field Service during World War I. The A. Piatt Andrew Bridge in Gloucester was named for him.

Nova Scotian-born artist Gilbert Tucker Margeson (1852-1949) opened the first Rockport artist studio

Margeson painted strong maritime work, and at the same time operated a telegraph key, ran a stationery store where he sold the first art supplies in town, and worked for the town as a tax collector. He was followed by artists Parker S. Perkins (1862-1942) and Eric Hudson (1864-1932).

William Morris Hunt (1824-1879) summered in Magnolia until his death in 1879.

Hunt studied and worked for several years in France. He became friends with and was heavily influenced by the work of Jean Francois Millet (1814-1875) and the Barbizon School. Those artists were dedicated to painting outside, and Millet brought the idea to Magnolia later.

Seventeen of William Morris Hunt’s female students painted in Annisquam, which kicked off the Annisquam art colony.

Hunt devoted the last decade of his life to teaching women students. Many of them followed him from Boston to Magnolia, including Ellen Day Hale (1855-1940) and Hunt’s protégée Helen M. Knowlton (1832-1918). Hunt and his students transformed Magnolia into a serious, though brief, art colony.

Winslow Homer stopped working as an illustrator and concentrated on his fine art.

The country needed an outlet for its post-war feelings. Homer’s work was emblematic of this broadening range of the permissible in art. In his transition to fine art, Homer called upon the artwork he did in Gloucester.
